We can’t wait to Veggie-cate the First State!

It’s our dream to have a garden in every interested Delaware school! This year HFHK will expand to several new schools in Kent and Sussex Counties, and will hire a new Program Coordinator to help serve these schools. HFHK is grateful for the support of our expansion, especially to FMC for a generous multi-year grant, the State of Delaware for awarding us the Specialty Crop Block Grant, the Laffey McHugh Foundation for supporting the additional supervisory staff time that will accompany this transformative transition, and to all our amazing individual donors. Your contributions have turned this vision into a reality. According to HFHK Founder and President, Dr. Thianda Manzara: “Delaware is a gem of a state, where paradoxically, agriculture is a vital industry, and yet many children think food comes from a grocery store. In HFHK school gardens, children learn otherwise, while having joyful experiences that enhance their intellectual, physical, and emotional well-being. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to improve agricultural literacy and health of all our state’s children, and to do our part to help prepare them to lead Delaware into the future.“ We wish you a year of health and happiness as we embark on our quest to Veggie-cate the First State together!

Thank You to our PR Chair Extraordinaire

HFHK partners with Colonial School District’s Nutrition Services on Penn Farm Teaching Garden

Thanks to the Colonial School District’s Nutrition Services, we are able to provide garden and farm education to more Delaware children, even those whose school does not currently have an HFHK vegetable gardening program. Colonial School District’s Nutrition Services secured a two-year Specialty Crop Block grant from the State of Delaware to start a teaching garden at Historic Penn Farm.

Join HFHK Founder, Dr. Thianda Manzara, for a morning  “Vegetable Garden Discovery Walk”.

Did you know Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids is part of the Delaware Children in Nature Coalition (DCIN)?  As a coalition of like-minded partners the DCIN coalition works to increase opportunities for children to participate in outdoor experiences, promote healthy lifestyles, support better access to green space, and encourage environmental literacy.  As a DCIN organization, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, has created a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn more about local organizations involved in outdoor and environmental education.

Serviam School Garden Encourages Students to Try New Vegetables

What impact does HFHK have on the students we serve?  At Serviam Girls Academy, our Education Cultivation school vegetable garden program allowed girls coming from low-income families to have access to a garden and a green space at their school.  This was the first gardening experience for many of the students.  While the girls enjoyed learning about gardening, their favorite part was the eating!
